As soon as we begin chanting the name of the Divine, distractions arise, and our dedication to the practice starts wavering. This is a common concern. However, the very fact that such distractions emerge is proof of the power of the Divine Name. When a person starts chanting, these distractions—our mental tendencies—become unsettled, fearing their own dissolution. They resist and try to divert us away from the practice.
These distractions are extremely subtle, and to overcome them, we need a remedy just as subtle yet powerful. That remedy is the continuous remembrance of the Divine Name. Consider a snake that has entered its burrow—it won’t leave simply because we shout at it. Instead, we must introduce something like smoke or heat that makes it uncomfortable enough to emerge on its own. Similarly, when we chant, distractions surface because the power of the Name has reached deep into our subconscious.
Thus, instead of being discouraged by these distractions, we should see them as a sign that the Name is working at a deeper level. Rather than withdrawing, we must persist with greater determination. Initially, doubts regarding the practice are natural for everyone. However, by consistently engaging in it, these doubts gradually fade away. Any skill, after all, is mastered through continuous effort.
It is often said that true devotion is lacking in the beginning, which is why we struggle to remember the Divine. But paradoxically, true devotion can only develop through sustained remembrance. A wise person, instead of overanalyzing, should simply start practicing remembrance. Over time, distractions will disappear, and Divine thoughts will naturally take their place.
When walking down the road, we may encounter people we would rather avoid. Yet, we continue on our path without stopping for them. Similarly, when unwanted thoughts arise, we should not let them distract us from our practice. Interestingly, just as an unwanted person might deliberately cough or call out to grab our attention, distractions try to demand our focus. In such moments, even if we momentarily acknowledge them, we should not abandon our chanting.
If doubts persist, let them exist—but keep chanting. The Name itself will dispel all doubts and weaken the distractions over time. Many efforts are wasted due to unnecessary skepticism. But if we make an unwavering decision never to abandon the Divine Name, our mind will inevitably find clarity and peace.
