Truly, today we deeply need to understand our inner self. Whether an action is noble or sinful, everything ultimately depends on the intention behind it. Even if one performs numerous virtuous deeds, if there’s a hidden worldly motive, what’s the real gain? You may toil endlessly, abandoning family responsibilities, and appear devoted on the outside — but unless your mind is aligned, you won’t attain the Divine. Only when the heart genuinely longs for God does devotion bear fruit.
Selfless action carries the presence of the Divine, so our deeds should be selfless. In fact, a spiritual seeker doesn’t have to exert as much as a householder. Even if half the effort put into worldly duties were offered toward spiritual pursuit, immense benefit would be gained. It’s quite possible to realize God from the very situation He has placed us in — if we learn to see Him there. But instead, we keep our eyes on worldly goals and then feel sorrow when we don’t find God. How can that work?
Even demons and tyrants practiced severe austerities to seek God — and so did the saints. But the saints, unlike the demons, had no desire apart from God. They saw their everything in union with Him. When love becomes intense, it transforms into a deep longing for God. Only when one feels, “Now that I’ve found You, I need nothing else,” can ego truly dissolve. God’s hand is always extended toward us; it is we who struggle to reach out.
Character outweighs both intelligence and wealth. A person of good conduct, faith in God, and contentment with their present condition, will find even worldly happiness. Happiness is not something to be manufactured externally — it resides in our inner attitude. If I belong to God, then so does everyone else. When one loves God, that love naturally spreads to all of creation.
Just as we gladly accept a bitter almond in the Lord’s offering, we should also gracefully accept the sorrow He sometimes sends us. Rather than questioning everything, we should remember God with devotion. Purity of heart cannot come without chanting His name. Once someone truly accepts that there’s nothing beyond the Name, nothing else needs to be said. Even if you mistakenly eat sugar thinking it’s salt, its sweetness will eventually reveal itself. In the same way, no matter the circumstances, if you chant His Name, it will surely uplift and protect you.
The one who has deep spiritual practice behind their actions is the one who truly contributes meaningfully to the world.
