God is the creator, protector, and also the destroyer of all. Yet, He is still called just and loving, because He is selfless. True love can only exist in selflessness. When someone speaks the truth to us, our ego or selfishness feels attacked. This selfishness becomes an obstacle to love. Our attachment to worldly pleasures interferes with divine love. Shouldn’t we then let go of anything that blocks our love for God? Our desire for material things and our emotional clinging to them must fade away. We should completely belong to God and to the saints. Nothing else should feel necessary to us.
Just as clay can be shaped into a Ganesh idol, a doll, or a pot, God too appears according to the nature of our devotion. Hence, our feelings must always be pure and selfless. A plant grows when its roots are watered — but we often fail to reach the root. So, we must focus on purifying the core of our devotion. For example, many know that one should do fast but a householder spent the whole morning cleaning the yard and the drains without even bathing or remembering God. That’s where we go wrong. We often don’t even realize what we truly need. When a person has jaundice, their eyes can’t recognize real colors — similarly, our vision is clouded. That’s why we should act according to the guidance of someone whose vision is clear — the Guru. We should follow the Guru’s instructions with faith and take God’s name with pure devotion. Then, doubts will not trouble us.
Once the sweetness of God’s name is truly tasted, He will never leave us. One should develop the firm belief that there is no truth apart from His name. The more we are attached to the body and the ego, the more we must take God’s name. All these years, we’ve constantly thought about worldly matters — what has that brought us? There’s no simpler path than chanting God’s name. People caught in worldly life often say, “Worldly pleasures give instant results, but divine experience comes only through faith and inference.” I agree with this view. I’m not surprised that worldly people don’t give up their attachments. But what saddens me is that they believe that temporary pleasures are lasting and immerse themselves in them.
I say — accept as true only what you’ve experienced to be true. When you realize that worldly pleasures bring no lasting happiness, only then will you begin to find joy in God’s name. We don’t have control over our body, nor over the people in our lives. So we should simply fulfill our duties, and while doing so, we must not let our minds become impure or restless.Make God-realization the goal of your life, and let everything you do revolve around that — stay connected to Him at all times.
