One should find joy in the situation the Divine places them in. Feeling sorrow over worldly troubles serves no purpose. We often go through life claiming everything as “mine, mine,” but do we ever truly reflect on how little of it actually comes to us? Real suffering arises from our endless craving to gain and possess more. The only way to overcome this craving is by keeping our minds anchored in remembrance of God. Living with the constant awareness that “I belong to God” is the path to peace. True religion lies in keeping our hearts connected to the Divine. One should neither deceive the world nor be deceived by it.
He who stays immersed in God’s name lives in the company of truth. Just as we choose our companions in life based on business or pleasure, so too should we choose the company of our mind with God’s name. Think of a dog who walks with his master—it becomes bold and barks at others, not out of pride but from the safety of companionship. Similarly, we must walk with God’s support—not to boast or dominate, but with humility. Forget the pride of “I am practicing spirituality,” for such pride diminishes the very practice itself. Focus on your duties and treat everyone with love. Just as a wife honors her in-laws to please her husband, we too should act in ways that bring joy to God.
If one tells a doctor, “Why won’t you give me the medicine in the black bottle?” the doctor replies, “Because you don’t have that illness.” Likewise, saints recognize the nature of each soul and offer guidance accordingly. That is why it’s important to follow what saints tell us to do, not merely imitate what they do. Hand over the thread of your kite—your life—to the saints, and rest easy, trusting them. If we keep walking the path our Guru shows us, he will always be there to guide us when the road splits. Like a signboard at a fork in the road that shows one way on road the saint will be there at the crossroads of our spiritual path. But what’s the point in asking, “What lies ahead?” if we aren’t even walking?
The saints are the ones who truly understood the meaning of the Vedas. What great blessings they’ve given us, for they revealed that meaning to us. Hence, we need not read the Vedas ourselves. We should simply follow the path the saints have shown us, without inserting our own interpretations. If we do this with trust, our spiritual journey is guaranteed to succeed.
Just as water turns to ice, but both inside and out it is still water, likewise, a true saint is someone completely filled—within and without—with divine love. Such saints can only be connected with through the remembrance of God’s name. As a disciple follows the instructions of the true Guru, he begins to develop a taste for that Name. And when the Name is taken with full sincerity, the soul feels truly fulfilled.
