When there’s an imbalance in the essential elements within the body that sustain good health, the body’s well-being deteriorates — and that’s what we call illness. Dry ginger (sunth) is a remedy that restores what is lacking in the body and reduces what is in excess, thereby maintaining health. Similarly, the Divine Name (chanting God’s name) works in the same way in the spiritual path. The Name removes the qualities and flaws within each person that block their spiritual growth and clears the path towards the Divine. No matter what shortcomings a person may have, if they sincerely hold on to the Name, their journey becomes smooth and they eventually reach their goal.
In our tradition, we light an oil lamp and ensure it stays continuously lit by regularly supplying it with oil. In the same way, one who seeks the light of bliss within must constantly keep feeding it with the oil of God’s Name. In short, if one desires true happiness, one must continuously chant and remember the Divine Name — because the source of eternal joy lies within it.Just like coldness is inseparably present in ice, bliss is always found in the presence of the Divine. We often chase happiness by increasing our possessions and pleasures, but the happiness that comes from things other than God is temporary — because it depends on circumstances, and once those change, the happiness fades too. This kind of joy is unstable.
The philosophy of “Eat, drink, and be merry” makes some sense to me, but it is flawed because it’s based solely on physical enjoyment, which is never permanent. A good situation today may turn bad tomorrow, and then the pleasure disappears. Instead, one should learn to create inner joy no matter the situation. Even if it’s just five minutes a day, spend that time in total connection with God. The bliss of those five minutes is greater than living a hundred years without it.It’s like this — no matter how much you talk about how sweet sugar is, a single pinch of it in your mouth gives you the real taste.
The same is true here. Life does contain happiness, but if one’s life isn’t joyful, it’s as good as lifeless. Only the one who has God in their life can experience truly joyful living. So if one truly wants to live, they must embrace the Divine Name.Just like traders keep a sign saying “Cash today, credit tomorrow,” we too should maintain the attitude of “Joy today, sorrow postponed.” The one whose joy is rooted in the Name experiences an eternal Diwali (festival of lights).Whatever state God keeps us in, we should remain content and never forget Him
