Doing a Daily Spiritual Practice (Nityanem) means remaining constantly in the Eternal. By nature, we ourselves are eternal, but we have wandered into the temporary. Forgetting the Eternal Supreme, we have become entangled in transient worldly pleasures. To help us remember Him, certain spiritual routines and practices are followed — these are called Nityanem.
Ideally, we should always remain in such remembrance, but since that is difficult, we should at least set aside some time every day for spiritual reading and reflection. Gradually, this turns into a habit. One who constantly chants the Lord’s name is always in Nityanem. We too should reflect on how to remain in constant remembrance of the Divine Name.
For this, obedience to the Guru’s command is the highest path. What the Guru instructs becomes our Nityanem. One must surrender to the Guru completely. A daily routine of reading a little, reflecting on what’s read, putting it into practice, and ultimately surrendering wholly to the Guru — this is the seeker’s step-by-step journey, and this itself is Nityanem.
As one progresses in life, the longing to meet the Divine should steadily increase. It should never become a lifeless ritual performed for its own sake. Every spiritual act should be heartfelt. Half-hearted or doubtful efforts disturb one’s spiritual progress. Faith is the most precious capital in this path. One must firmly believe that true peace and fulfillment lie only in contentment.
Just as a thermometer measures one’s fever, while practicing spirituality, one must check within to see how much genuine inner peace is being attained. A seeker should avoid dwelling on the faults of others because the seeds of those very flaws lie within oneself. Desires for recognition, fame, and prestige are highly dangerous — even great seekers fall prey to them and lose their way. Likewise, unchecked greed for wealth and lust can drag down even those who have come close to God. These worldly attachments bind us, while the bond of God’s love alone truly frees us and grants lasting peace.
One should never get carried away by the world’s praise or criticism. Among wealth, lust, and prestige, it is prestige that clings most strongly to our ego. Hence, one must be extremely cautious. Where there’s a chance of being honored, avoid going there. If unavoidable, sincerely feel, ‘this is God’s grace, not mine.’ One who is truly great never craves honor, and if it comes to them, they remain unaffected. We should honestly examine whether we enjoy receiving praise, for this will reveal how spiritually mature we truly are.
In everyday life, one should offer salutations to the Divine, greet others with ‘god name’, and stay connected to it. Once true love for the Lord takes root, it never leaves. The bond of God’s love is the only real attachment, for it alone liberates us from all other bondages.
