The Kauravas could have at least given the Pandavas five villages and thus avoided war — for this very reason, Lord Shri Krishna Himself went as a messenger to Duryodhana. At that time, Duryodhana said, “O Lord, what you say is absolutely right. From the standpoint of justice, it is necessary to act as you suggest. But I simply do not possess the wisdom to do so — what can I do about that? Since You are all-powerful, if You just change my understanding, all problems would be instantly resolved!”
But that didn’t happen, and the war ultimately took place, as we all know. The same situation was seen with Ravana too.
It appears, then, that incarnations in human form (Saguna Avataras) cannot directly transform one’s inner nature or understanding. The power to awaken pure and righteous wisdom lies solely in the divine Name of God. That’s why there’s a need now for the eternal, unchanging incarnation of His Name. The Name itself is God. We must embrace that Name, with single-pointed devotion.
For example — a man was otherwise healthy, but his leg developed a dangerous condition. The doctor said, “If you wish to save your life, we must amputate the leg.” Now — though life remains, if the hands don’t move, the feet don’t move, the eyes can’t see, or the ears can’t hear, that life has little value.
Conversely, if life itself is absent, nothing else matters either. If life is present, it is still possible to manage without one or two senses — for instance, if hearing is lost, it’s manageable, life goes on.
Similarly, in spiritual practice, devotion and constant remembrance of God are like life itself — and everything else is like the senses. If that remembrance is lost, it’s like losing life itself. One must therefore protect this inner life at all costs. Without it, no matter how much else is accomplished, it leads to disappointment in the end.
We often say we are unhappy because things don’t go the way we want. But in reality, the very presence of these desires in our mind is the real root of sorrow. The idea that this or that thing will bring happiness is itself the seed of our unhappiness. We need to understand this.
A cat plays with a mouse — catches it, lets it go, catches it again, releases it again — but in the end, takes its life. In the same way, time plays with us — keeps us entangled in hope and moves forward.
It’s better if we recognize this truth from the start: there’s no lasting gain in being trapped in such hopes. Only by holding firmly to God’s remembrance can a person attain true welfare. Otherwise, it’s very difficult.
Those who constantly say “I… I…,” those who teach others, scholars, pundits — they too are caught up in illusion. That’s why I say — just do this: “Preserve that constant remembrance, and do only what can be done while holding onto it.”
When things don’t happen according to our wishes — that itself is a mark of God’s grace.
