CHANT OF GOD NAME

The only true way to realize our own self is through constant remembrance of the Divine Name. Though the essence of God resides within every living being, it is only human beings who have the capacity to truly recognize this. However, observe how this awareness gradually diminishes: originally, the soul — being of the very nature of the Divine — believes, “I am That (God Himself).” From there, it descends to thinking, “I belong to Him,” and finally falls to, “There is no connection between us.”

This decline happens because attachment to the physical body grows stronger, until one becomes firmly convinced that “I am this body.” And yet, even without conscious awareness, people instinctively express the truth. For example, when a close friend passes away, a person naturally says, “My friend is gone.” The body still lies before them, yet instinctively, they recognize the departed essence — the spark of the Divine within — as the real friend, not the physical form.

Unknowingly, the truth still finds its way into their words. However, when it comes to their own self, people fail to hold on to this understanding, and live convinced that “I am this body.” This is because they’ve forgotten their true ‘Self’ and become trapped in bodily identity.

The remedy lies in retracing the same path by which we fell. First, by awakening the awareness that “Though I am now identified with this body, I truly belong to the Divine.” In its highest state, this awareness transforms into the realization “I am That.”

How can this be achieved? By remembering that which we once forgot — the Divine Name. The practice of constant remembrance is the surest way to rediscover who we really are. True spiritual progress is simple in essence, but it must follow the right method. Just as untying a knot requires pulling the correct thread — otherwise it tightens further — so too must we carefully approach this inner quest.

When we realize who we truly are, the nature of the Divine also becomes clear, because both are one and the same. The Supreme is beyond qualities and form — so naturally, to know Him, we too must transcend body-consciousness and qualities. One cannot truly know something without becoming one with it; to know God, we must become Divine in nature ourselves. This is why the sages have said: “Become a saint to recognize a saint,” or “Worship Shiva by becoming Shiva.”

Until the intoxication of divine remembrance completely overtakes us, the sense of ‘I’ does not dissolve.
