“The true way to recognize our real self is through constant remembrance of the Divine Name. Though the essence of God exists within every living being, the awareness to realize this truth is present only in humans. Yet, see how this awareness gradually declines: initially, the soul, being of the same nature as God, claims ‘I am That — the Divine itself.’ But slowly, it slips to saying ‘I belong to Him,’ and finally degrades to ‘I have nothing to do with Him.’
This downfall happens because the attachment to the physical body keeps increasing, until one firmly believes that ‘I am this body.’ But interestingly, even though a person remains ignorant of the truth, their words sometimes reflect the deeper reality. For example, when a man’s close friend passes away, he says ‘I have lost my friend,’ implying that he did not consider the body as his friend, but the living consciousness within it — the divine spark. So unknowingly, his words reveal the truth.
Yet when it comes to himself, he forgets this fact and keeps identifying with his body. This is because he has lost awareness of his true ‘Self,’ and the attachment to the body has grown stronger. The solution to this is to retrace the path by which he has fallen. First, he must awaken the thought, ‘Though I now appear to be this body, I truly belong to God.’ The highest state of this awareness is the realization, ‘I am That.’
How can this be achieved? By remembering the one whose forgetfulness caused this fall — the Divine. The best way to sustain remembrance is through constant repetition of God’s Name. When one keeps this remembrance alive, one realizes the truth of one’s being, and self-recognition dawns. True spiritual practice is indeed this simple, but it must be followed in the right manner. Just like when trying to untie a knot, one must know which thread to pull, or the entanglement worsens — it is the same with the spiritual journey.
When one understands the true nature of the Self, the nature of the Divine is automatically revealed — as both are of the same essence. God is beyond attributes; so to realize Him, one must also transcend bodily identity. One can truly know a thing only by becoming one with it. To realize the formless Divine, one must become formless in consciousness too. That is why it is said, ‘Only a saint can truly recognize a saint
