Love must ultimately be for the Name alone. For this pure love to arise, one must gradually reduce attachment to worldly subjects and cultivate unwavering devotion. There should be a firm faith that it is the Name alone that saves, that accomplishes everything. While continuing our worldly duties and efforts, there must be a deep conviction that it is the Divine alone who grants success.
When we bring medicine from a servant sent by a physician, we don’t credit the servant for its healing power. In fact, going a step further, isn’t it the Divine who ultimately brings about that cure through the medicine? Surrendering to God means developing the sense that He alone is truly ours, that without Him, there is no one else, and nothing we do has any independent power — everything is carried out by Him alone, for our good.
We naturally love our family because we consider them ‘ours.’ Love is born from this sense of belonging. In the same way, when one starts feeling the Divine as truly ‘their own,’ won’t love for Him naturally arise? Moreover, when one firmly believes that the Lord is like a closest, dearest friend who works only for our welfare, what place would anxiety have in such a heart?
Our true welfare lies in dissolving the false identification with the body. To cultivate a sense of closeness to the Divine, one must spend ample time in the company of His Name. One must not run after miraculous powers or signs of success on the path — they are distractions. Instead, such things should naturally follow us, not the other way around.
What’s so special if a snake doesn’t bite someone? Whether it’s a snake or any other creature, one should learn to see the Divine essence in everything, to feel a sense of belongingness with all. When this is achieved, no one remains an enemy. Just as a child feels safe simply knowing its mother is nearby, so too should we feel fearless in the awareness of the Divine’s constant presence.
Our focus should remain solely on reaching the destination, like a traveler looking out for the right train, without worrying too much about who’s sitting in the compartment. Even if no one accompanies us, we quietly board and journey toward our goal, peacefully resting as we go. In the same way, one should stay devoted to one’s spiritual practice without getting caught up in the debates of how the world was created and what its elements are — such inquiries never lead to conclusive answers.
Always remember: without clearing doubts, one cannot become steady in the practice of the Name. As long as body-consciousness exists, the true value of the Name won’t be understood. If one sincerely desires liberation, one should never let go of the Name. The Divine is beyond all limitations — and so is His Name.
