The Divine Name is both the foundation and the pinnacle of righteous actions. Any good deed done with remembrance of God can be considered righteous; but any action done while forgetting God cannot truly be called a righteous deed.
For example, if a person simply says “his wish name” with his mouth but does not actually remember the Lord in his heart, can we call that utterance a righteous act? In truth, the Divine Name is so powerful in itself that even if it is chanted knowingly or unknowingly, it still falls under the category of good deeds. This is because the Lord Himself has said, “Wherever My Name is spoken, there I dwell as the Supreme Being.”
Hence, the act of uttering the Name and the presence of God cannot be separated. Whether or not the speaker is aware of the Lord while chanting, the act is still considered righteous. What distinguishes the Divine Name from all other actions is this: all other actions require the support of the Name to be complete or true, whereas the Divine Name is inherently perfect—it can never be incomplete. Therefore, it is irrelevant whether one remembers God while chanting or not—the very act of chanting brings forth righteous deeds.
It’s similar to how, when a child is born, a mother naturally starts producing milk, cares for the child lovingly, and expresses affection without being taught to do so. In the same way, a person who chants the Name naturally starts engaging in righteous actions. In fact, just as a mother cannot avoid loving her child even if asked not to, a person who chants the Divine Name cannot avoid performing good deeds—even if told to stop.
So when can we say that righteous actions have truly borne fruit? Only when the Divine Name has taken root in one’s speech and heart.
The Supreme Being has already guided us: “Do you wish to belong to Me? Then go ahead and carry out your worldly duties with utmost diligence, never lose heart in your efforts, but always remember that I alone am the giver of results. Be content in whatever situation comes your way, and follow My advice—it will heal all your afflictions. And what is that medicine? It is My Name.”
So truly study and reflect on this Divine Name. Make a firm resolution that life without the Name is not a true life. Deep within, feel that you cannot and should not live without the Name. The power of devotion through the Name can only be understood by one who chants it with sincere faith. Wherever love for the Divine Name blossoms, the Lord Himself stands behind that person. This is the eternal truth—I say it with utmost conviction. So take the Lord’s Name with love and devotion. Call out to Him from the depths of your heart at least once—“Rama!”—in such a way that He feels drawn to come and meet you.
The ultimate fulfillment of righteous action lies in developing true love for the Divine Name.
